Ian Melliar Cup Reviewed

The tournament that started on Thursday afternoon at 15h00 concluded at 16h30 today with the prize giving. Over the course of the weekend there were absolutely brilliant games. U/15 teams of this era would possibly have beaten many a first team...

of generations past was the comment passed by a number of WP representatives. Water Polo has come along in leaps and bounds and it is the aim with the Ian Melliar Cup to promote the game and introduce youngsters to the professional nature of water polo.

Pool A was possibly the hardest pool with 3 top teams competing for the top position. Grey PE lost to St Johns with Grey beating Reddam who in turn went on to beat St Johns. The pool ended with all 3 teams on the same number of log points but with Grey PE having the best and St Johns the second best goal difference. The pick of the matches had to be the St Johns Vs Reddam game. Reddam need to beat St Johns by 4 goals to end 2nd in their pool and 6 to end first in their pool and at a stage were 4-1 up on St Johns. St Johns managed to fight back bringing the scores 5-6 and thus ending 2nd in their pool.

The play off games saw numerous games going into extra time with sudden death penalties having to decide the winners. The games were played in good spirit by the boys who went home better players.

St Johns met Grey PE (defending champions) in the semi finals and managed to beat them securing their place in the finals as did Bishops beating Clifton College.

In the duel for 3rd and 4th position Clifton came out on top with Grey PE ending 4th. The Finals saw Bishops convincingly beaten by a superior St John's team. Final tournament awards were given to the tournament team, best attacker, defender and goal keeper as well as medals to each of the contestants.

The organizers wish to thank:  Sportsman's Warehouse Tokai, Cyclone, Zubri, Everysun who contributed greatly to the successful running of the tournament and we are grateful to them for their support. The parents were once again absolute stars making the work of the tournament committee that much easier. Looking back on the tournament, it has only improved year by year and long may the budding sport of water polo continue to thrive in South Africa.
