Girls Water Polo: The Latest SA Schools Top 20 Rankings

It was the Old Petrian’s Tournament hosted by St Peters College that was the main event in the past week and which saw the very best of SA teams in action.

The St Marys Waverley water polo Old PetriansFrom early on it was evident that the hosts , St Peters had prepared well for the tournament as they were a far cry from the team that finished in 12th position last year. Stirling also enjoyed a very productive tournament as did the powerful St. Mary’s Waverly side who brushed aside all the opposition on their way to the finals.

Reddam however, who have invested plenty in their water polo across the age groups, and with several SA Schools players in their team, were the team to watch as they were able to cruise through to a meeting in the finals with St.Mary’s after crushing all comers in the pool and playoff stages of the tournament.

Going into the final as the underdog St.Mary’s needed to score early and get the ball past Reddam’s vice captain and goalkeeper Nicky James if they were going to have any chance of taking the trophy. St Mary’s were in trouble going into the fourth chukka 5-2 down and it looked as if Reddam were going to take the crown again. However spurred on by the locals they pulled themselves back into the match as they scored three unanswered goals to get the score to 5-5 at the end of regulation time. It was time for a heart thumping penalty shoot out to separate the two teams which saw St.Mary’s Waverly holding their nerve to take the trophy in a pulsating final.

Reddam however have plenty to be positive about, they played with almost a full team of Grade 11’s so they will be an even stronger proposition in 2015.

The tournament as made some interesting movement in the rankings and deservedly St Mary’s Waverly, Stirling and Reddam make up the top three teams at this stage of the season.
