Still very early day for the Girl’s Water Polo season with plenty of tournaments and festivals still to take place, yet this is how some of the teams look so far in 2020.

Water Polo: St Stithians Girls Riding High

St Stithians Girls’ water polo has become synonymous with success so I asked Saints’ master in charge of water polo and first team head coach Pierre le Roux if he could give SA School Sports readers some pointers as to why.

Water Polo: Jeppe on the Rise

Over the past year, Jeppe’s water polo has seen a steep climb on the leader boards. Between having six of their players, across various age groups, currently in the South African teams, despite not being able to produce as many in previous years, and their first team cementing their place as a top contender at all major tournaments, the big question on everybody’s mind is, ‘How are they doing it?’

Few would dispute that SACS have put in a master class this season and are ostensibly the leading team in the nation after enjoying one of their finest years in the pool.

It has been a sensational season from the St Stithians Water Polo team who rest at the top of the SA School Sports Rankings after finishing this stage of 2019 unbeaten.

It has been St Stithians all the way this season with an unbeaten run of 27 matches as they have taken home every trophy on offer. Saints lead this week’s Girls Water Polo Rankings again and it seems unlikely they will be caught.

St Stithians have rocketed up the table to settle in the 2nd spot on this week’s Boys Top 40 Water Polo Rankings following a great performance at the KES Tournament last week.

Saints finished the KES Tournament in third place after notching up several notable wins but it was their 11-8 loss to eventual winners SACS that scuppered their chances of higher honors.

SACS have been in mercurial form this year and were deserved winners of the KES Tournament as they completed a clean sweep in the pool stages and although pushed hard by St. Johns College in the finals managed to hold on for the victory.

SACS are still laying claim to the No.1 spot on this week’s Boy’s Water Polo Rankings but the field has closed on them and it is looking like several teams could well be serious contenders in 2019.

In 2018 it was Pearson who ended the season as the leading team in the country and although they have started well once against we are looking at St Stithians who are taking the No.1 spot for this week on the Water Polo Rankings.

SACS put on a powerful performance last week at the St Andrews College Shield Tournament where they overcame the strong Clifton team in the final match to clinch the top spot on this week’s SA School Sports Rankings.

Boys Water Polo: The First Rankings for 2019

Still very early days in the 2019 Water Polo season with several of the big teams yet to play enough matches to get included on this year’s rankings but in another week or two we can expect many of the usual suspects heading to the top of the table.

The ITEC Grey College Water Polo was the big event this past week with several of the leading teams in action which contributed to a high level tournament.

The Water Polo season is up and running and it promises to be another highly competitive season. Here are this week’s results from around the pools of SA:

Water Polo: Pearson Riding the Manthe Wave

Within minutes of talking water polo – and Pearson water polo in particular – one becomes as enthralled in the journey as does one “Mr Pearson Water Polo and Aquatics” the affable Luke Manthe.

Virtually from the start of the 2018 season there has been one team that has been shining above the rest in the water polo pools across the country. It therefore comes as no surprise that Pearson finish the year as the No.1 Water Polo team in South Africa after completing a terrific season.
