Swimming: Reuben Schoeman Nails PB

On Saturday, 6 September, Glenwood Gr 9 boy, Reuben Schoeman from Yellowwood Park swam a personal best time of 59.03 in the 5km event in the 14 – 16 year age group category at the Federation International de Natation (FINA) world junior open water swimming championships in Balatonfured, Hungary.

 Reuben SchoemanRueben was selected for the South African swimming team when he finished in the top two of the South African open water championships in February.

Reuben has been swimming since Grade 3.

Reuben was at Trident Swim club, where under coach Eugene Hulley, Reuben perfected his swimming. Schoeman scooped 10 gold medals and one silver medal at the 2011 regionals in Bloemftontien and finished first overall in the U13 – 30 categories at last year’s Midmar Mile. Reuben prefers long distance swimming such as 1,500 m, 5km and 3km.

Reuben trains at Kings Park Swimming Pool twice-a-day with swimming coach, Alistar Hatfield.

Reuben’s goal is to swim in the open water Olympics in 2020.
