Rugby: Grey HS & St Andrews Share Spoils

Grey met their old foes St Andrews College from Grahamstown in near perfect conditions on Lower Field on Saturday.

The first ten minutes were tight, tense and entertaining as St Andrew’s dominated possession before opening the scoring with a penalty goal from the boot of Guy Rushmere following a collapsed maul by Grey, after a solid drive by the St Andrew’s forwards to lead 3-0.

Despite St Andrew’s having the upper hand in the possession and territory stats, they were not able to capitalize and with only 9 minutes left in the first half, it was Grey's turn to score – a dominant phase of possession rounded off by Jared Kirsten for Grey in the right-hand corner. The next moment of magic was belonged to Grey again – an offload by Matt Easton went to Liyema Matyolweni who drew the last defender, allowing Siviwe Zondani to sprint away to score a converted try. Grey ended the first half in the lead by 12 to 3.

The second half belonged to St Andrews – who made excellent use of the ever-strengthening wind to pin Grey deep in their 22-meter area. The sustained pressure told – as St Andrews scored their first try 15 minutes into the half by centre Miles Dankwerts. Guy Rushmere scored the second try for SAC rounding off a long range move.

Grey threw everything they had into the remaining 5 minutes. Buoyed by the passionate singing of Grey's loyal supporters and a yellow card to St Andrew’s, it was their turn to dominate.

An endless period of attack eventually saw Greys Yolisa Dladla fight his way over in the left-hand corner for their third try, which leveled the scores at 17 all. The conversion sailed wide and despite some frenetic final moments – that is how it would end. An exciting draw on the day.
