First XV Rugby: The SA Schools Top 100 Rankings

The dust settles on another epic Easter Weekend which saw numerous titanic struggles taking place across the country in the brilliantly organised and run Easter Festivals.

The Powerade Performance Rugby RankingsWith so much rugby being played in so short a time there was bound to be some movement on the table and it given us a clearer picture of the teams that are in form at this stage of the season.

Grey College without question remains at the top of schoolboy rugby for another week and they are still unbeaten although they were twice given a scare at the Kearsney Festival. Westville played their hearts out to come close to causing an upset but were always slightly behind the eight ball and ran out of steam at the end. However Monnas had a terrific match against Grey and managed to turn on the heat in the second half of the match to earn a memorable 10-10 draw.

Another team that is playing some of their best rugby for a couple of seasons in Glenwood who likewise went unbeaten during Easter and in fact they are yet to taste defeat this year. The must vaunted EG Jansen fell away in their match against the Green Machine after blowing their gaskets in their match against Grey College and didn’t seem up for the challenge laid down by the Durban outfit. It has been a great start to the season by Glenwood who steady make their way into the top five in the country.

EG Jansen tripped up over the weekend with two losses and they will be disappointed with their return after investing plenty of time and effort in preparation for the festival. Still they are a very competent side who will bounce back and be a challenge for any who they face for the duration of the season.

Affies have had a poor start to the season by their lofty standards and just haven’t as of yet been able to recapture the form of 2013. Three losses (Waterkloof, Monument and HTS Middelburg) out of five matches is not what we have come to expect from Affies although they did hand Selborne College their first defeat which could hint at them finally finding their feet and a promise of a strong season from here on. However the rankings are reflecting the current performance and form of the teams and a school’s past tradition or pedigree counts for little if the results are not being achieved. Yet class is permanent and few will be surprised if Affies don’t surge up the table as the season progresses.
