The hockey season is now in full swing and many of the leading teams have already notched up several victories to boost their confidence as we head into a season that will only end in mid-September. Here are the first SA School Sports Rankings for 2016.

It is noticeable that Pretoria Boys High, have started brilliantly this season with an unbeaten run of five matches which have included the scalps of St.Andrews College and Bishops along the way.

Grey College also look like good value this year and can also boast some great unbeaten form which has seen them score heavily in some of their victories.

We have kept the minimum amount of matches to 3 before a team is entered into the rankings so we can expect some movement as more teams are entered as they play more matches.

Maritzburg College who have traditionally topped the rankings are yet to kickstart their season but they can never be counted out and we can expect them entering the top of the table as the matches get played.

Please send your team’s outstanding results to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to ensure their inclusion.

How are the rankings calculated?

It is an often asked question and we will try to briefly explain the science behind the equation.

  • These are performance rankings which means it is an indication of the current form of a team
  • The rankings are not based on a win/loss ratio
  • The strength of the opposition is a vital factor of the equation. At the start of the season each team is “seeded” according to where they and the U16 team finished in the rankings. A seeding of 10 is awarded to the top teams, 9 to the next strongest teams, then 8 ...etc.
  • The seeding of teams helps to grade a win against weaker or lower seeded team, which ultimately means a win against a lower seeded team will not result in the full complement of win bonus points being accorded to the victor.
  • Bonus points of varying value are rewarded for the result Win or Draw and for a Loss if it was within 2 goals.
  • Bonus points are also awarded for the actual goals scored on the field and the difference between “goals for” and “goals against”.
  • The amount of actual bonus points attributed for a Win, Draw or Loss within 2 goals depends on the seeding of the opposition. For eg: If TEAM A (seeded 10) beats TEAM B (seeded 6), TEAM A will only receive 60% of the maximum allowed bonus points for a win. If TEAM B was seeded 5, then TEAM A would receive 50% of the bonus points for the win and so on...
  • All the bonus points are totalled and divided by the amount of matches played which generates and “average bonus points per match” which ultimately is ranking the team.
  • A new addition is the rewarding of bonus points to a losing team if the loss was by 2 goals or less which will hopefully give a fairer reflection of the closeness of the match.
  • The key to finishing as high as possible is to win as many matches as possible against equal strength opposition and if you going to lose make sure it is by 2 goals or less points.
