Hockey News: Amathole Wins Girls U18 IPT & SA Teams

Amathole win SA U18 girls interprovincial hockey title

The Amathole girls from East London won the SA U18 Girls Interprovincial Hockey Tournament title with a 2-1 win over Southern Free State at Pape's Astro at Maritzburg College on Saturday afternoon after trailing 1-0 at half-time.

It was a triumph for coach Greg Beling, captain Bronwyn Kretzman and the Amathole side after much thought had gone into this tourney. South Free State, too, under coach Braam van Wyk, captain Inke Wolmarans and the team also proved how the two small provinces had outdone the heavyweight provinces in reaching the final.

SFS opened the scoring through Nicole Walraven's action goal two minutes from half-time before Amathole (Border) hit back to equalise with the Bloemfontein girls when Rebecca Pope netted a penalty corner midway through the second half.
The title-winning goal came from the penalty corner route once again, when Lauren Jasson found the back of the net 10 minutes from the end in a match handled by the officials chosen from the tournament's panel to umpire the gold medal match, Boland's Caryn Maart and Tessa van Vuuren of KwaZulu-Natal.

Much credit must go to tournament organizer Charmaine Koekemoer, tournament director Joy Pieterson and their support staff for the handling all the snags that accompany events of this size, with a massive 24 teams taking part.
