Hockey: Match Report- Kearsney College vs St.Stithians

This was a tough but even game with two structured teams taking to the field, presenting phases of pressure for both.

The first half was about missed opportunities for both teams.  Visitors Kearsney had short corners which they failed to convert.  They were able to score with two minutes before the end of the first half through Blake Tyack’s counter attack, taking the score to 1-0 at half time.

St Stithians came back hard in the second half, scoring in the first minute of the second half through a defensive error from Kearsney.

The game was locked at 1-1 for about 10 minutes, before great work in the mid field by Kearsney’s Garrett Stevens who turned over possession and was able to set up Matthew Lees to finish with a great reverse stick shot.  The visitors went 2-1 up.

After this Kearsney were under pressure for about 10 minutes and conceded a number of short corners which St Stithians were eventually able to capitalise on and get the game back level at 2-2 with two minutes to go.

The last two minutes were frantic and saw Kearsney up the tempo and eventually win their first corner of the game with a minute to go on the clock.

The last short corner saw Kearsney convert a clinical drag flick to win the game 3-2 with 10 seconds remaining on the clock.

By way of interest Kearsney 1st X1 hockey coach Sihle Ntuli has been appointed SA u16 hockey coach.
