Thrilling Victory for Grey High v Noord Kaap

The Grey High 1st XI clashed with the fast improving Noord Kaap side from Kimberley in a declaration match this past Sunday in a match that would test Grey all the way.

Grey High won the toss and elected to bat in very favorable batting conditions. However Noord Kaap applied pressure with some good line and length bowling and managed to make important inroads by nipping out the top order cheaply.

Grey contributed to the collapse with some dodgy shot selection and they were soon scrambling at 52/8 and looking like they would struggle to get anywhere near to a competitive score. However the big hitting tail led by Brad Mackenzie started to open his shoulders and played a handsome 51 runs not out to help get Grey High to a modest 105 runs all out.

Noord Kaap who on their day are capable of a few surprises went into bat relishing claiming a big scalp. Yet Grey High have a very useful bowling attack this year and although there was still plenty of overs for Noord Kaap to get the runs they went on the offensive from the first ball.

The bowling was fast and furious as suddenly the ball began to seam around and the fielding side threw themselves at anything that came their way. Grey High managed to humble Noord Kaap to 49/5 and the nerves began to tell from the Kimberly outfit. Needing only two run an over Noord Kaap attempted to dig in and get to the total without any heroics but Brad Mackenzie was soon back in the action taking 2 wickets from his three overs for just 13 runs and the match came down to the wire.

Needing just nine runs to claim a memorable victory with two wickets in hand Noord Kaap could virtually taste the win, but Brad Bopp popped into the attack and shut the visitors our taking the remaining wickets and hand Grey High a heart stopping four run win.

Brad Bopp finished with the best bowling figures of 3/19 and was ably supported by Sam Mkumbuzi who claimed 3/31 in his nine over spell.
