Match Report: Kingwood v Grey High School

The Grey/ Kingswood fixture this weekend, the 9th November, 2013, ended up being an unbelievable contest going down to the final delivery of the day. In a match that swung both ways constantly throughout the day, Grey fought back from what looked like certain defeat to claim a nail-biting tie off the last ball. Both teams deserve massive credit for a sublime cricket contest.

The day started off with a pitch that wasn’t prepared as well as Kingswood would have liked, after the weather had made it very difficult in the week leading up to the match. Grey won the toss and predictably put Kingswood in to bat. The Kingswood openers batted well, although Michael Hansel was lucky to survive a number of half chances due to some poor discipline and indifferent shot selection. After Drew Matthews was dismissed early, Brad Haller settled the ship as usual, but was needlessly run out looking for a second run off a no-ball. Daine Kruger joined Hansel and together the two batted magnificently in a partnership of 117. Hansel settled down and started showing his real talent while Kruger again showed his class as a young batsman. Kruger batted through the innings for a flawless 54 not out, while Hansel was dismissed in the 41st over for a magnificent 120 off 113 balls. Kingswood lost a few wickets in the pursuit of runs towards the end of the innings, with Sam Mkumbuzi bowling superbly at the death, picking up 3 for 36 in 10. Kingswood ended on 253 for 8 after their allotted 50 overs.

The Grey batting order was indeed a quality one with exceptional depth, so Kingswood needed to make early inroads. Brad Haller was devastating with the new ball, as he bowled both Ferreira and Lindsay in his first over, then picking up the Grey captain Lloyd Brown in the 6th over. Grey fought back with a solid partnership of 87 between Matt Breetzke and Ruan Knoetze (35), but continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. However, Breetzke was simply unbelievably clinical on the other end and was not going to give up the chase lightly. The pressure start to mount on Kingswood as Darren Blignaut (38) made full use of the batting powerplay, leaving Grey with an outside chance of a win. At 206 for 8, Grey did look dead and buried, other than Breeztke who was still looking sublime. David Dutton then played the innings of his life, scoring a blitz 34 off 17 balls to get Grey on the brink of victory, and leaving the young Kingswood side panicking a little. With 2 overs to go, Kingswood needed two wickets, while grey needed 17 runs. In a massive blow for Grey, the last ball of the penultimate over went for a boundary leaving 8 required off the last over. A superb bit of fielding at long off, had Matt Breetzke run-out on the far end, as he tried to get back for two and keep the strike. The first of those runs though brought up his century, which Grey had desperately needed from him. Brad Haller’s final over was also inch perfect, limiting Grey to 7, and quite unbelievably ending the game on a tie. Kingswood will no doubt be licking their wounds, after letting Grey back in to the game, however, that would not be acknowledging the fine knock of Breetzke, who scored 103 off 151 deliveries (batting for 3 hours and 19 minutes). And if a batter does that, his team doesn’t deserve to lose. It was a fine display of mature batting by a very young man, who clearly has an incredible future ahead of him. Grey finished on 253 for 9, in what was a thrilling encounter between two fantastic cricket teams. Brad Haller finished on 3 for 39 in his 10 and Ani Mteto 2 for 46 in his 10.

The contest was indeed an example of just how good school boy cricket can be. Both teams should be praised for an unbelievable spectacle, which in the end, probably had two teams who both didn’t deserve to lose the battle.
