First XI Cricket: Who Has Dominated the Decade?

It’s that time of year where it is difficult to escape the strains of Christmas music on the radio, Black Friday specials and tinsel in shopping centres. Thoughts are focused on how heavy the turkey is and for just how long it needs to be in the Weber. Groundsmen all around the country are enjoying the fact that the pitches can receive some much-needed attention and no wickets need to be prepared for the endless stream of matches demanded by the schools’ cricket programme.

The players’ focus, in many cases, has switched to the preparation for the various national weeks that will be taking place in December. For some, there’s the prospect of a Cubs week selection or even a spot in the SA U19 side that will be playing for the World Cup on our shores.

As the decade draws to a close, it seems the right time to reflect on the rankings since they began in 2012. From this perspective, it provides for interesting reading to see which schools have been the top-performing sides over this eight-year period. We obtained an average for each school by taking their final position in the respective years, adding them together and dividing by eight. Where teams were not ranked in a particular year, we have given them the next position i.e. in 2012 where only 35 sides were ranked, schools not appearing receive a position of 36. This has possibly skewed some rankings, though it does not really affect the top teams.

Looking closely at the results, the gap between third and tenth place is a relatively close affair with only 3.5 points separating them. Few will argue that Grey High, KES, Grey College, St Andrew’s School, Hilton, Wynberg, Glenwood and Affies have been major players on the schools’ cricket scene, but all of them have suffered as a result of finishing in the 30s once or twice, which has pushed their averages out. St Stithians have been remarkably consistent with only one year where they finished outside of the top 10. They are a full 8.2 points ahead of third place, Grey High, with an average of 5.1 and thoroughly deserve their position of number two. However, it is Rondebosch Boys’ High that stand out from the rest of the pack and claim the top position in the country.

The boys from Cape Town have enjoyed a phenomenal run and have ended no lower than sixth on the ranking lists, twice claiming the top position during the eight-year period. Their average of 3 is 2.1 points better than their closest contender. I am sure that many schoolboy coaches around the country would love to receive the Rondebosch recipe from their Secret Santa this festive season.
