Kearsney basketball made history by beating perennial basketball power house DHS on Saturday 26th October, 2013 for the first time in the school’s history.

In what was a closely contested game with the lead changing hands on a number of occasions, neither side was able to pull away in the first two quarters. In the first quarter Kearsney lead 14 – 12; and in the second quarter Kearsney was able to extend their lead to four points. Both teams played good defence and limited the opposition’s shots during the first half.

In the third quarter Kearsney managed to get a ten point lead only to see it evaporate as they allowed DHS to close the gap with some quick transition baskets on the fast break. The quarter ended with DHS trailing by two points: 35 – 37. It would come down to which team held their nerve.

DHS quickly pulled away in the fourth quarter but late in the quarter, with the clock winding down, Kearsney stole the ball twice and made a crucial free throw to give themselves a chance of winning the game.

With one second left on the clock, Kearsney put in from the base line to executed a baseline play to perfection, scoring a three pointer to give them their first victory over DHS in the school’s history.Final Score: Kearsney 50 – DHS 49

Kearsney’s first team was not the school’s only success story as the U14A, U15A and U16A teams also recorded their first wins over the basketball powerhouse.
